Gold Reef City Where Everybody Behaves Like A Child

This post is about Gold Reef City Where Everybody Behaves like a Child. Have you ever been to a place where everybody behaves like a child? If you haven’t been to one, Gold Reef City Theme Park will make you behave like one. If you do not love heights, then there is no need for you to embark on RUNAWAY TRAIN or the Storm Chaser. More about that later on, but there are many more activities at the Gold Reef City which will make you feel a REAL HUMAN BEING who is brave and daring.

Gold Reef City, Theme Park, Johannesburg, South Africa

Gold Reef City is an amusement park fitted for one or an all family relaxation centre for various visitors of all ages. Situated 5 kilometres from Johannesburg and located at an old Gold Mine, the theme park is a hive of activities for people seeking all sorts of amusement. However, the distance by road from OR Tambo Airport to Gold Reef City is 28.8 kilometres.
The amusement park is home to the biggest and bloodcurdling roller coasters in Africa pitting it against the top holiday destinations in Africa.

The owner of Gold Reef City is Kaiden Ballakistein who lives in Johannesburg, South Africa. His visionary venture has created a good tourist attraction in South Africa. The members of staff wear friendly faces and are very good and helpful guides who ensure that every new visitor received keeps on coming back for more joy and relaxation.

Who does not want to have fun and behave and shout like a 10-year-old child? You may be aged 30 and above or even 50 and above, Gold Reef City is the place for you to relax, have fun and enjoy yourself. That is why Gold Reef City Authorities charges everybody from 3 years old to whatever age because everyone enjoys himself/herself while inside the theme park.

Some people are afraid of heights and are scared of roller coasters. They do not even want to go beyond the gates of Gold reef City. My advice to them is that they should follow certain steps to overcome their fear. The first one is that they should look up at statistics showing deaths arising from roller coaster rides. They will find that such figures are almost non-existent. The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) has stressed that roller coaster deaths are extremely rare.

To overcome the fear of heights or roller coaster rides, begin practising in smaller or shorter rides. If you are in a queue for a coaster ride, distract yourself with different thoughts. Then familiarize yourself with the layout of the duration of the coaster ride and think positively.

The Gold Reef City is operational on Tuesdays to Sundays. Gates open from 09.30 hours to 17.00 hours.  However, every day is operational during Gauteng School Holidays.

Upon production of a birth certificate, the authorities will give you a permit to ride roller coasters freely throughout the day. However, the theme park remains closed each Christmas Day.

Current entry prices are R210 for Thrill Rider, R175 for student and R120 for non-rider. You should ensure that you get on more than three rides in a day. These prices are for both adults and kids above 3 years old. However, to avoid long queues for buying entry tickets at Gold Reef City, one can buy Gold Reef City Theme Park tickets ahead of time at Computicket. To purchase tickets, visit or call 083 915 8000.

You shall not be allowed to take in pets, your own food, skateboards, rollerblades, radios or bicycles. Guests should remain fully dressed at all times.

As soon as you are inside, you have to be patient for your turn to take a thrilling ride on roller coasters. Sometimes you have to wait for as long as an hour or two before your turn. That is why it is advisable to go to the amusement park as early as possible so that you can have a minimum of three rides on a particular day. Then you would remain with enough time to do other things apart from riding.

You will be warned verbally and then notices are put along the way as you ride:

HOLD TIGHT ON THE HANDRAIL AND REMAIN SEATED AT ALL TIMES. Therefore, with the frightening speed of a roller coaster, it would be unwise not to hold to the rails tightly.

This ride is the scariest at Gold Reef City. If you dare to do this, you will be taken to the top of a mining shaft tower (fifty meters) in a cage and then plunged down at an angle of 90 degrees at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour into an open shaft. Many people come out of there with various stories including how brave they had been to undertake such a ride.

The Tower of Terror, Gold Reef City

The Gold Reef City provides elderly people to join the young at heart and test-drive many more thrilling rides. There is actually a ride for everyone because you have to decide from a wide choice including family and friendly rides.

The biggest advantage is that riding a rollercoaster could help to put you in a relaxed mood as laughter also is a health benefit on its own. Other studies reveal that stress is reduced greatly and the memory is enhanced.

There are several activities one can do apart from embarking on taking the “scary” rides. One can visit the Gold Mine and witness how Gold used to be collected and processed. You can even touch gold itself. Apart from that one can watch movies at the Apartheid Museum and then view all casinos, hotels, restaurants and bars. Other activities include going to the theatre and “window shopping” in the stores.

If you are looking for an unforgettable experience in your lifetime, then look no further because Gold Reef City is equal to the task in Johannesburg, South Africa. However, you have to be on the lookout for your personal safety as Johannesburg is not known to be a friendly city.

  1.  I am always on the hunt for another great amusement park and Gold Reef City sounds just like the place to go! Me and my family have been to multiple so far and we’re researching more to go to this spring break when we stumbled across this amazing article thank you so much for putting together by the way! The prices seem to be relatively good and the rules on food and clothing and everything else seem to be pretty much in line with how it is in the USA. this sounds like a great spot to take the family to I will run it by the wife and if she agrees I’ll drop back by and tell you all about our experience

    1. Thank you, Denton, for leaving a wonderful comment. It is nice to know that you have purposed to visit Gold Reef City with your family. I am sure you will have a wonderful time at  one of Johannesburg’s top attractions.
At R125 per person which is an equivalent of less than USD 9.00, you get more than what you paid for.

I look forward to reading your experience after you have visited South Africa and checked out Gold Reef City.

  2. Many thanks to you for sharing such an excellent article with us. I visited Gold Leaf City, South Africa, quite a while ago and the city is very beautiful. And I went with my family members and my family had a lot of fun with my little brother who lives there. The good thing is there are so many fun things and the thing I like the most is the rollercoaster. After reading your article, everyone will know about Gold Reef City and if anyone ever goes on a trip to South Arica, they will share new experiences with you.

    1. It is a pleasure, Shariful, sharing your experience at Gold Reef City with us. It is good you went there with family because that is when you derive the most fun.

I do like the roller coaster too, but the tower of terror brings a whole new experience. You literally feel your heart drop as you fall down 90-degrees from an unbelievable height of 50 meters at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour into an open mine shaft. It is confirmed that the fear factor is rated 10 out of 10.
This is an experience everyone visiting Gold Reef City should have and share with the world.

  3. An enlightening and useful description of a theme park unknown to me before reading this posting.

I was very amused at the seemingly tongue in cheek advice for those less confident of roller coaster experiences follow certain steps to overcome their fear………..they should look up at statistics showing deaths arising from roller coaster rides
I am most confident that this will do nothing to persuade my wife to get over her fear of heights and chronic motion sickness LoL 🧐

    1. I am glad to know that you now know about this theme park, Hamish.
This is one of the best places in Africa to kill stress and scream like a child.
Looking up statistics may not be a solution for Acrophobia but rather for those scared that something can go wrong during the ride.
I have read that those scared of heights and succeeded to ride the roller coaster have done so with their eyes closed. I don’t know if that could a reason to persuade your wife!

  4. Hello, I really want to first appreciate your efforts in putting this great website together and writing this article. I did not know what Gold Reef City was a wonderful place for family relaxation, having fun and behaving like a child. I like Roller coasters and I wish to go there with my Fire cam MINI 1080 Helmet camera. Can I order multiple cameras at one time?

    1. Thank you for leaving me a comment, Shimba. I am glad you read this post even though you have never been at Gold Reef City. It must have been your love for the Roller coaster that got you here!

You can order multiple cameras as long as they can be attached somewhere; not to be hand-held since you need to hold firmly with both hands during the ride. The beauty with the MINI 1080 Helmet camera is that it can be attached to your helmet or cap.

  5. I enjoy a lot while reading your guide and find it very useful for everyone.  While reading I know that first one is that we should look up at statistics showing deaths arising from roller coaster rides. we will find that such figures are almost non-existent. The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions has stressed that roller coaster deaths are extremely rare. To overcome the fear of heights or roller coaster rides, begin practising in smaller or shorter rides. Thanks for your awesome guide.

    1. Thank you, Parveen, for yet another wonderful comment. I appreciate you reading my posts.
It is true that there is extra caution taken when building theme parks to ensure that there are no lives lost. Just one death can lead to the closure of the business. They also ensure that they train and hire staff good enough to ensure the safety of all visitors.

I hope you are not afraid of heights to try out Gold Reef City.
